6/29/2000The Election Commission derecognises seven regional parties in some states -- Samata Party in Haryana, Shiv Sena in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and the RJD in Manipur, NTR-Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh, the Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) in Chandigarh, the United Minority Front in Assam and the Haryana Vikas Party in Haryana-- These will remain registered but unrecognised parties.

9/20/1856Narayan Guru was born in Chempazhanthi village of Kerala. Sri Narayan Guru was a social reformer, led reform movement in Kerala, rejected casteism, and promoted new values of spiritual freedom and social equality. He also stressed the need for the spiritual and social uplift of the downtrodden by their own efforts through the establishment of temples and educational institutions. In the process, he denounced the superstitions that clouded the fundamental Hindu cultural convention of caste.

12/9/1946The first meeting of Constitutional Committee Assembly was held in Parliment after a gap of two years, 11 months and 17 days. The Congress started its work of framing the Indian Constitution. Muslim League boycott failed to prevent Constituent Assembly opening. From 16th August 1946, the country witnessed communal riots on an unprecedented scale. At this crucial juncture, on 20th February 1947, Clement Atlee the British prime minister, fixed June 1948 as a deadline for transfer of power and Lord Mountbatten was appointed as the new Viceroy.

1/15/1966The Indian Air Force achieved equal status with the Army and possessed in excess of 70,000 personnel and was nearing its 45-squadron goal. Its composition in the autumn of 1968 included 23 fighter category squadrons, three tactical bomber squadrons, a maritime patrol squadron (with ex-Air India L. 1049G Super Constellations), 11 transport squadrons, four AOP squadrons, a number of helicopter units and a few SAM squadrons.
