4/27/1857	Jamshedji Framji Madan ( J. F. Madan ), founder of India's first Cinema Hall - 'Elphinstone Palace' at Calcutta, Madan & Co. and Parsi Theatrical Company, was born.
5/20/1915	Gandhiji founded Satyagraha Ashram (later known as Sabarmati Ashram after the name of the river) at Ahmedabad.
4/13/1947	Diplomatic relations between India and Russia established.
5/11/1999	Supreme Court confirms the death sentence on four of the 26 accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, reduces to life imprisonment the sentence on three others and acquits the remaining 19.
8/15/1947	The Defence department becomes the Ministry of Defence under a Cabinet Minister. Each service was placed under its own Commander-in-Chief. Under the Constitution, the supreme command of the Armed Forces was vested with the President.
1/4/1881	Publication of newspaper 'Kesri' started.
5/18/1966	Panchanan Maheshwari, great Indian scientist of botany, passed away. He studied the morphology, anatomy and embryology of some angiosperms, the class of plants which produce flowers. He discovered species of plants like ""Panchanania Jaipuriensis and Isoeted Panchananil."" He wrote two authoritative books, 'An Introduction to the Embryology of Angiosperms' & 'Recent Advances in Embryology on Angiosperms'. In 1951, he founded the International Society of plant Morphologists.
12/3/1971	Pakistan took the initiative of striking the airfields both in the East and the West. While the IAF carried out retaliatory air strikes in the West and shot the Pakistan Air Force (PAP) out of the skies.
1/1/1981	This year was announced to be observed as the ""International Year for the Disabled"".
11/1/1966	Haryana state was created from Punjab, and Chandigarh was declared as the Union Territory and capital of both Punjab and Haryana.
