5/2/1953 | 40 persons were reported losing their lives today in the first crash of a jet airliner in commercial service. The jetliner, a British-built Comet, plunged to earth in a violent storm just a few minutes after taking off from Calcutta. It was carrying a party of rubber and tin operators from Malaya to England. There were no survivors. Two Comets have crashed before, one last October and one in March, but neither was carrying passengers. |

12/4/1920 | Sultan Mehmud of Ghazni began his first real expedition to India by defeating the Hindu King Jaipal. He won Afghanisthan and Punjab in Peshawar battle. This was the first major Muslim conquest in India. |

4/1/1933 | Indian Air Force was established at Drigh Road in Karachi (now in Pakistan). Subroto Mukherjee and four other officers were inducted as pilots when the first Indian Air Force Squadron was formed. The first aircraft flight joined the Indian Air Force, at that time it possessed a strength of six RAF-trained officers and 19 Havai Sepoys (literally, air soldiers); its aircraft inventory comprised four Westland Wapiti II. A army co-operation biplaned at Drigh Road as the ""A"" Flight nucleus of the planned No.1 (Army Co-operation) Squadron. |
