Los Angeles, July 17 (IANS) Nominations for the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards came with some surprises and some snubs, but brought along a lot of reasons to celebrate for many.

Some were pleasantly surprised, some were pleased, some saw it as a positive sign of representation and some have already started wondering what would they wear at the "coolest party".

The popular fantasy drama "Game Of Thrones", which wrapped up its story this year, set a new record by earning 32 nominations at the 2019 Emmys. It was followed by Amazon Prime's "The Marvelous Mrs Maisel" with 20 nominations, including nods for Outstanding Comedy Series and Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

HBO's "Chernobyl" earned 19 nominations. These included a nomination for Best Limited Series, with Jared Harris getting a nod in the category of Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson have received nomination in the supporting actor categories for the show.

"Formally the coolest party I could ever dream of being invited to. This is insane. Huge thanks to the Television Academy for the nod and for recognising so many different players from our 'The Marvelous Mrs Maisel' family who make the show sing," tweeted Rachel Brosnahan, who is in contention in the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category for her starring role in the show.

Actress Alex Borstein is in the race to pick up the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series trophy. She reacted with a funny tweet.

"Thanks for all the Emmy nom, congrats! Celebrated by making long shadows with my doggie and picking up his p**p," wrote Borstein, famous as Susie in "The Marvelous Mrs Maisel".

The final season of "Game Of Thrones" (GoT) might have disappointed many, but it create a big bang at the Emmy nominations.

Season eight of GoT leads the field of nominees, contending in the categories of Outstanding Drama Series, Best Actor (Kit Harington), Best Actress (Emilia Clarke), and four Best Supporting Actress nods -- for Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. Actors Alfie Allen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage are contenders in the Best Supporting Actor category.

"I can't believe it. Thank you universe... Can it truly be real?" wrote Christie on Instagram.

Ava DuVernay's Netflix docu-series "When They See Us", which highlights the issue of racism through the real-life story of five black and Latino men who are wrongly convicted for a gangrape, got a whopping 16 Emmy nods including Outstanding Limited Series.

"Thank you to the real men for inviting me to tell their story. Thank you Television Academy for honouring the work. Saluting every single crew and cast member... Thank you Netflix for believing in this story and letting me tell it the exact way I wanted. Appreciate the faith and the fearlessness," DuVernay tweeted.

On earning a nomination in the category of Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for "When They See Us", Vera Farmiga said: "Visibility is paramount."

Actress Patricia Arquette was asleep when she got the call to inform her of the news that she had been nominated in two categories -- Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for "The Act", and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for "Escape At Dannemora", currently streaming on Hotstar Premium in India.

"I was dead asleep when my phone rang and it was Joey King on FaceTime crying. But she was crying happy tears and I said 'Did you get nominated?' She cried and I said,'What is it? Did you get nominated?' and she shook her head 'Yes! We both did!' It was such a great feeling to see her face and feel her joy," Arquette said.

Actress Joey King will fight for the trophy of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie with Arquette, Amy Adams ("Sharp Objects"), Aunjanue Ellis ("When They See Us"), Niecy Nash ("When They See Us") and Michelle Williams ("Fosse/Verdon").

Joey King said that her work on 'The Act' was "the most fulfilling and challenging work I've gotten to do as an actress thus far".

"To be nominated for an Emmy in a category with such incredible nominees by my side, especially Patricia, is the most surreal feeling. I haven't stopped crying," she added.

"Pose" star Billy Porter has become the first openly gay black man with an Emmy nomination for Lead Actor in a Drama, and he is "overwhelmed with joy and gratitude".

"There was no context for this before... to be an openly gay black man nominated for a leading actor drama Emmy Award. It just didn't happen. And now, I'm living truth that it can be possible. It's incredible to be recognised for the work. And then it goes much deeper. It's about representation. It's about all people's stories being told. It's about the art," Porter said.

Reacting on his nomination for "Black Monday", Don Cheadle said: "Never gets old. Thanks, TV Academy and a huge thanks to the entire cast, crew and creators of 'Black Monday'. We'll roast marshmallows on those golden wings if I bring it home."

Sacha Baron Cohen, who was nominated for directing the variety series "Who Is America?", gave a special shout out to former Vice President Dick Cheney.

"I want to thank my crack team of researchers, (who were) told to uncover bigotry, racism and hate in the US. That took them about 30 seconds? they just started following the President.

While I am flattered at these nods, it is a shame that my co-stars were not recognised. Particularly Dick Cheney, who I had hoped would come across on camera as someone who'd gleefully sent hundreds of thousands to their pointless death - and boy did he deliver," Cohen said.

"This Is Us" star Mandy Moore was happy to be in competition with Emilia Clarke, Viola Davis, Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, Laura Linney and Robin Wright in the Outstanding Drama Actress section.

"I am still in shock and overwhelmed but filled with gratitude for the nomination in a category with such undeniably strong and talented women, all of whom I absolutely stand in awe of," she noted.

The 71st Emmy Awards will be held on September 22 in Los Angeles.
