Artificial intelligence (AI) is a wide-ranging tool that enables us to rethink how we integrate information, analyze data, and use the resulting insights to improve decision making. The world is seeing extraordinary advances in AI. Robots, AI, and driverless cars are no longer things of the distant future. They are with us today and will become increasingly common very soon. AI future and untapped potential is far-ranging.
AI is making tremendous impact already in the world and creating abundant opportunities to drive a new wave of economic progress, solve some of the worlds most difficult problems and provide solutions to some of the most profound changes in human history that are coming soon. AI has the potential to transform the world in many sectors such as information technology, telecommunications, transport, traffic management, health care, education, criminal justice, defense, banking, and agriculture. People already use AI in their everyday lives from Siri to Alexa and Google, Facebook and Amazon, and have done for quite some time.
To allow AI to realize its full potential, governments need to create a public policy environment that fosters AI innovation, while mitigating unintended societal consequences. As these tools advance deeper into everyday use, they also raise the concerns about the impact of these developments on jobs, personal privacy question and impact on society, economy, and politics.
It is estimated about 50% of our jobs will be taken over by AI and automation within the next 15 years. A McKinsey report also shows that the number of engineering professionals like computer scientists, engineers, IT administrators, IT workers, and tech consulting jobs will increase by 20 million to 50 million globally by 2030. If companies need fewer workers due to automation and robotics, what happens to those who once held those jobs and dont have the skills for new jobs? Without adequate safeguards or the incorporation of ethical considerations, the AI utopia can quickly turn into dystopia.
What is AI?
AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence behavior by computer systems. Artificial intelligence is not the same as machine learning, despite the fact it's regularly used as a synonym for it. The chief difference to remember is that machine learning is simply a process by which a computer can learn a skill, whereas artificial intelligence refers to a computer that can "think" for itself without being programmed to do so. AI can encompass anything from Googles search algorithms to IBMs Watson to autonomous weapons.
When it comes to the future of AI, there are infinite possibilities. In addition to creating new jobs, AI will also help people do their jobs easier and better a lot better. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Paul Daugherty, Accentures Chief Technology and Innovation Officer summed this idea up as, ...Human plus machine equals superpowers.
AI is being integrated with and deployed into a variety of sectors such as finance, national security, health care, criminal justice, transportation, and smart cities. There are numerous examples where AI already is making an impact on the world and augmenting human capabilities in significant ways. In the not so distant future, AI will also be operating our cars, and manufacturing most of the things we buy. A prominent example of this is taking place in stock exchanges, where high-frequency trading by machines has replaced much of human decision making.
In the future, AI presents tremendous opportunities for economic development. A project undertaken by Price Waterhouse Coopers estimated that ...artificial intelligence technologies could increase global GDP by $15.7 trillion, a full 14%, by 2030.
AI can be used to solve an array of problems associated with our current environment. With increasing processing power, AI, can possibly solve issues such as climate change, natural calamities prediction, and so on. Dangerous jobs will be a thing of the past. AI will take over many of the hazardous jobs in the future.
AI has tremendous potential to transform and revolutionize the energy industry and utilities sector. AI is being harnessed to develop innumerable smart utility applications that can efficiently take critical decisions autonomously and accurately, without human intervention. With further advances in computer technology, AI will allow the utilities, energy companies, and grid operators to explore new ways to transition to the use renewable energy technologies more efficiently and poised to revolutionize the way we produce, transmit, and consume energy.
Last, but not the least, is a possibility of AI as friends. There are already companies that are trying to build a robot that can act as a full-time companion to humans. This way, healthcare could also be improved.
The wars of the future will rely on smart technology like never before. Drones are just the beginning. With the increasing convergence of conventional defense, surveillance, and reconnaissance with cybersecurity, the need for algorithm-based AI expands. China dominates in global AI funding. The Chinese government is investing a lot in this futuristic technology. The Chinese government intelligence plan includes everything from smart agriculture and intelligent logistics to military applications.
One of the most universal benefits of AI for businesses is that it enables people to use their creativity for verification, validity, security and control. The top applications of AI are in manufacturing, construction, rescue operations, personal security, and speech recognition. AI is currently used in customer service and support and as a smart home manager, e.g., Amazon, Apple, Google, Yahoo, IBM, Microsoft, etc. China is using AI to improve healthcare and speed up diagnosis. AI has the potential to move civilization forward in progressive ways.
Nobody can predict what the future will bring, but we need to be preparing for it now. We can all agree on one thing it may create more jobs than it displaces. By offering new tools for entrepreneurs, it may also create new lines of business that we cant imagine now.
It is quite obvious that interacting with AI will soon become an everyday activity. AI is one of the key rising technology breakthroughs because it tackles profoundly difficult problems, and the solutions to those problems can be applied to sectors important to human wellbeing......ranging from health, education and commerce to transport, utilities, entertainment, handling dangerous duties, solving climate change, criminal justice, friendships, and improving the care of our elders. These developments are generating substantial economic and social benefits.
A recent study from Redwood Software and Sapio Research underscores this view. Participants in the 2017 study said they believe that 60 percent of businesses can be automated in the next five years.
The world is on the cusp of revolutionizing many sectors through artificial intelligence, but the way AI systems are developed need to be better understood due to the major implications these technologies will have for society as a whole. AI revolution mean that we face a new and historically unique challenge. The greatest ethical challenge we face has yet to be fully realized. With the appropriate safeguards, countries will increase the odds that AI systems are intentional, intelligent, and adaptable without sacrificing the important qualities that define humanity.
Our AI future will be created by us, and it will reflect the choices we make and the actions we take. AI may well be a revolution in human affairs, and become the single most influential human innovation in history. AI has the potential to become more intelligent than any human, we have no way of predicting how it will behave. We are in the midst of this Fourth Industrial Revolution, and its end result is unknown.
